Most “Nosarans” hear the name Juan Surfo and they immediatly think about the blond guy that owns a surf shop in North Guiones, but do we really know who he is or what’s his story? Nosara.com interviewed him to get to know a little bit more about this local surf teacher:

How long have you been in nosara?

My whole life, born and raised. Never left. Love my home.

How long have you been surfing?

Stared when I was 16, back then there wasn’t much development in Playa Guiones, so there wasn’t many people surfing here – approx 25 years ago. I was one of the first locals to surf around here and the gringos nick-named me ‘SURFO’. I was the ‘JUAN’ who surfed.

What are your hobbies when you’re not surfing?

Not much time for hobbies, since I am at the surf shop or teaching surf all day, everyday of the year – but I recently started Mountain Biking when the surf is bad.

What do you love most about your job?

Everyday is like a vacation, love seeing people excited from learning to surf and meeting people from all over the world, it is a dream come true for me to have a job like this.

Tell us something people don’t know about you?

I have 14 brothers and sisters, grew up poor, worked hard to get to where I am now. Owner of 3 cats – yes they are all fixed.

What do you love most about Nosara?

I love that alot of the older people that first moved here years ago, have been and are still working hard to protect the town and keep the park land and refuge safe and that there is no construction on the beach – Nosara has developed into a beautiful and peaceful place to live and has given me great opportunities. I am thankful
